1. In order to study the role assumed by epidemiology in occupational health literature and characterize its change over the years, a bibliometric study was conducted with a MEDLINE search. Evaluation was done on 9,024 articles published in eight representative occupational health journals for the period 1980-93. The proportion of source items indexed by epidemiology as a descriptor increased over threefold from 7.9% (42/534) in 1980 to over 25% after 1990.

2. Our department, in collaboration with other departments of this Institute as well as the Liaoning Public Health and Anti-epidemic station of the P.R. China, assessed the relationship between asbestos exposure and blood level of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine in Chinese asbestos workers (collaborative research). In addition, the collaborative group has initiated a cohort of Chinese steel workers (membership ca. 200,000) to conduct a study on occupational exposure and morbidity and mortality.
